Description:
Heavily engraved mythological stories decorate the top and bottom of the brass and copper Dutch tobacco box. The lids have secret compartments that reveal the story of Actaeon and Artemis. In Greek mythology, Actaeon, or Aktaion was a son of Aristaeus and Autonoe in Boeotia, a hunter who endured the wrath of Artemis. Artemis was once bathing nude in the woods near Boeotian Orchomenos when the hunter Actaeon stumbled across her. He stopped and stared, amazed at her ravishing beauty. When she saw him, Artemis changed him to a stag, for his unlucky profanation of her virginal mysteries, and set his own hounds to kill him. He was torn apart. The brightly colored polychrome design displays two ornamental doves in a Tree of Life with pink, yellow and blue bell-shaped flowers growing from a heart with a pink daisy in its center. The white ceramic plate is inscribed RUTH EMMA BATHOLOMEW and WILLIAM NEWMAN RICHARDS across the top, MARRIED JUNE 16, 1925 SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA at the bottom. This richly evocative horn box features a hinged lid with a Biblical scene in relief of Jesus his mother Mary and Mary Magdelene. Jesus bearing the cross gestures to the pleading women while a Roman soldier leads him on. Two onlookers flank the scene. Inscribed in French at the bottom of scene: JESUS RENCONTRANT SA Ste MERE. It is in very good condition with no cracks, breaks, or repairs. Mid 19th century.
