Title:
Ring 15 Kt Rose Gold Garnet Paste Early Georgian
Period:
Late 18th century
Description:
This is a fine original early Georgian ring from the 18th century. It has been crafted in 15 Kt rose gold. Set with a flat cut garnet, surrounded by fourteen, hand crimped faceted green paste collets set in silver on the top of a gold shank. Foiled back. The underside is exceptional, domed ribbed base, and each of the sides decorated with fleur de lis motives. It is in good condition, but shows some age related small nicks. Unmarked so I can't say for sure but the fleur de lis motives indicates it may be French. Acid tested and guaranteed to be 15Kt.

Age: Mid 18th Century
Size: 4 (can be made larger) Top measures: 12.5 mm x 13.5 mm with a 6.5mm x 5.5mm garnet

Total weight: 2.8 grams

The term Georgian refers to an era in English history during the reign of King George I-IV from 1714 - 1830. Sometimes the term is applied to jewelry from other countries (France, Italy, and the United States for example). Closed backs were used on almost all gems and paste stones and most stones were foiled. Foiling is the use of a metal coating, sometimes colored, painted on the back of a stone to enhance its brilliance. Often for colored gems a flat cut was used - the top being flat with a few facets on the edges. Also it was a great century for paste. Even Marie Antoinette had her own paste jewelers - it was not just for those who could not afford real gems
