Victorian Lantern Pinchbeck Charm
Period:
19th century

This playful articulated lantern charm is made of pinchbeck, an alloy of copper and zinc. The front hinged door features a domed bezel-set red stone. The combination of stone and metal elements evoke whimsy with a slight hint of the unexpected. The body of the piece is incised with a distinct floral motif, and a slim rope-like handle and a double fluted cap with a finial adds a final delicate touch. There is also a faceted red stone on the bottom.

Pinchbeck is named after Christopher Pinchbeck, a London clockmaker, who invented this alloy in the 18th century to imitate gold.
