14 Kt gold riding crop pin with an excellent quality reverse crystal intaglio. Reverse crystal, also called Essex crystal, showing a head of a horse framed and backed in 14 Kt yellow gold. Part of the crop is coiled with white gold or platinum. Reverse crystal jewelry was always fashionable. This pin was made around early 20th century. Marked on the pin 14 K and a maker's mark. The brooch and crystal is in excellent vintage condition. Total weight: 5.7 grams Size: pin 2" long, crystal 1/2" diameter, approximately 4 mm A reverse crystal is done when a cabochon rock crystal is carved intaglio, then painted by a fine miniature painter with extremely fine brushes and paint working in reverse to create incredibly detailed images.. Finally, the back was sealed with a layer of mother-of-pearl in order to preserve the painted areas. The deeper the carving, the more pronounced the three-dimensional effect when looked on the top which acts like a magnifier. The motifs most commonly found for men were sporting themes - horses, dogs, foxes |
