A reverse crystal is done when a cabochon rock crystal is carved intaglio, then painted by a fine miniature painter with extremely fine brushes and paint working in reverse to create incredibly detailed images.. Finally, the back was sealed with a layer of mother-of-pearl in order to preserve the painted areas. The deeper the carving, the more pronounced the three-dimensional effect when looked on the top which acts like a magnifier.
The motifs most commonly found for men were sporting themes - horses, dogs, foxes
