This tiny collar or lapel pin is a hand painted, reverse intaglio crystal flag pendant, mounted in 14 K yellow gold, circa 1900. The crystal shows fine reverse carving work and skilled hand painting of the flag of the United Kingdom in intricate detail. Hallmarked on the secure C hook and latch clasp closure. Size: 13.5 mm diameter Weight: 2 g Overall condition is excellent vintage, no water damage on the crystal. Reverse crystal was fashionable in the 19th century. The cabochon stone is carved and hand painted in a reverse manner. The deeper is the carving, the more pronounced are the three-dimensional effects. It is usually backed by a thin layer of mother-of-pearl. This type of crystal is sometimes referred to as "Essex Crystal" |
