This is a stunning 14 Kt gold shield shaped mourning or sentimental padlock charm or pendant from the Victorian era. Beautiful crisp chasing is in great condition, opens and closes securely. The back has a braided strand of hair of a loved one under glass. It is not marked but acid tested, and guaranteed 14 Kt. Size: 7/8" H, 1/2" W Weight: 2.6 grams. Mourning jewelry is widely associated with the Victorian Era, after the death of Prince Albert in 1861, when Queen Victoria, started a trend for mourning jewelry for decades. A close cousin of mourning jewelry is sentimental jewelry. A lock of hair might have come from one's fiance, so determining whether a piece of jewelry is true mourning or merely sentimental can be tricky. |
