Description:
This incredibly hardwood medieval blanket chest or storage trunk is dated 1646. The date is carved into the front of the panels. Its facade is formed of four masterfully carved oak panels, suspended in a fancifully carved frame with delightful stylized plant carvings. The slightly domed lid above a frieze incised with a symmetrical display of stylized flower sprays over four fielded panels similarly carved and separated by stiles incised. Carved on the front top on the left AN, and the right NO ( Latin for year). In the same manner the year 1646 is also separated to the two sides and in the middle the letters IHS (Latin Iesus Hominum Salvator, meaning "Jesus Savior of Mankind)." The sides are made of two panels between two rails with simple molded edges and an iron handle with no decorations. The back, and the inside which was never intended to be seen, are also not decorated. There are two side boxes inside for holding small items. Size: 32" High, 50.5" Long, 22" Deep. It was shipped to the United States from an incredible estate of a lady from Europe, who wishes to remain unknown. Most coffers were found in churches, where they were used to store vestments, formal documents, and other valuables. In recent years they are great storage for blankets in bedrooms.
