This luminous painting done on oil on canvas highlights a procession of horse-drawn carriages filled with joyful Russian peasants in colorful folk costume as they ride through the snow-filled winter countryside. This type of genre scene is representative of the Bulgarian-born Russian painter, Pjotr Constantine Stojanow (1857-1957), known for his depictions of the Russian countryside as well as historical scenes. Signed "C. Stojanow" at lower right. The gilded wood frame is typical of the period. Size: 31" x 23" (78.7cm x 58.4cm); 34" x 26" (86.4cm x 66.0cm) framed Stojanow studied at Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts (1887-1894) A similar painting by this artist was sold at the Viennese auction house Dorotheum on 12/5/2017 for EUR 6250.00 ($7000) |
