Description:
The ivory field with all over off set rows of "boteh" paisley supported by meandering vines issuing floral motifs and leaves, within a dark blue flower head, floral cartouche and continuous flowering vine border.
This is a Sarough Hamadan rug from north west Persia, made of wool on cotton foundation.
The Hamadan district is made up of some one hundred and fifty towns and villages, all creating their own distinctive styles based on traditional designs often dating back centuries. The town of Sarough, outside this district often uses the border design as seen here. This rug shows clear Hamadan construction. The field design shows repeat " boteh" motifs which is the Persian word for "leaf". It is often referred to as the Paisley design. A good decorative example of Sarough Hamadan weaving in quite good condition.
